Pit Bull Training
Batman the "Pit-Bull"
Batman came in to our rescue organization as a misunderstood dog with 'supposed' issues.  An initial evaluation determined that Batman was aggressive, prey driven, and not good with cats and children.  He was in boarding in a crate where he couldn't even stand up.  The evaluator said it would be best to euthanize him.  Kitty Connection stepped in and stopped the euthanasia and pulled Batman out and put him with a trainer in Arlington.  We believed he was adoptable but needed to find the 'right trainer' to evaluate him.

We then were referred to Brandon.  Enough said.  He was so amazing to watch as he evaluated Batman!  Batman obeyed every command that Brandon did and for a full hour and a half, was evaluated for aggressiveness, which he had none, with children, which he had none, and with other big dogs, which he had none.  Small dogs and cats weren't tested but with any Pit mix, this could be a normal prey drive.

Thanks to Brandon, Batman is not the dog that several evaluators claimed him to be.  He's a happy, playful 2.5-3 year old that just loves people and the outdoors and playing to his heart's content.

Batman will continue to train with Batman on Sunday's, for as long as Brandon sees fit, and then we will find him his forever home.  We will also mandate that Batman's adopters use Brandon as their Trainer.

A very happy ending to a very frustrating, heartsick past couple of weeks.

Kitty Connection would like to thank Brandon for showing us and the people that were doubtful, that Batman is truly a dog that is adoptable and a dog that really was so 'misunderstood'.  We will recommend Brandon to everyone!!

Move over Cesar, Brandon IS the dog whisperer.

THANK YOU!

Dick and Ripley (German Shepherd Dog)

I began attending Brandon's obedience classes a few months ago with Ripley, a 9-month-old male GSD  who had some confidence issues with other dogs. Brandon helped me learn to build Ripley's confidence through a combination of daily behavior training and immediate correction of unwanted behavior. Thanks to Brandon, Ripley is growing into a well-behaved pet who now mixes comfortably with almost all other dogs and he recently passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen's test. He is also doing well in some of  Brandon's more advanced classes and we are beginning to train for rally participation. Brandon is a gifted dog trainer with an uncanny ability to handle complex behavior issues both in one-on-one private sessions and group sessions. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Cheryl and Maggie

Thank you, thank you Brandon! Your obedience classes have given ME the confidence to be a better dog owner by being able to really communicate with my dog.  Your classes have given MAGGIE the obedience experience and socialization that has made the difference in her behavior.  We both have benefitted from your knowledge, know-how and patience in teaching. Your obedience classes are informative, challenging and very instructional yet always fun, with new experiences within each session.  And... a few laughs as well! Love the variety of dogs, large & small and their owners. It all adds up to one terrific learning experience.

I am attaching a picture of Maggie & I that is proof of my new confidence in Maggie!  Never would I have attempted a trip to Boston to participate with over 1,000 other dogs in the MSPCA Walk in September if I had not felt the confidence that you have helped me to develop.  Your training allows me to take Maggie into these new situations knowing that our "communication" will allow us to enjoy the experience.

There's a still a lot more for us to learn... So, Maggie & I will be seeing you in class again, real soon.

Sincerely,

Cheryl & Maggie, the "Boxador"

We have been training our Rottie pup Axel with Brandon Since March of 2009.

Brandon shows sincere interest and has knowledge in all breeds.  Every class he asks if anyone has any problem behaviors or questions.  He demonstrates excellent listening skills and can explain the dogs behavior with a good sense of humor and gives solutions that work.

He has earned our respect as a professional trainer and shows affection to Axel as well.

Brandon is the "Real Deal".

Brandon helped a Somerville-Cambridge Elder Service client to retain their dogs when they became unable to take their three dogs out for walks.  Their dogs are their lives and in no way wanted to surrender them.  His training has enabled this happy family to remain together.

Along with my husband Jimmy and my two dogs, Balian and Nymeria, I am pleased to highly recommend Brandon Hayes as a canine expert and trainer. Brandon does more than train dogs; he truly understands how they operate and how best to communicate with them. Balian is a sweet dog who craves leadership.  Nymeria is full of energy, enthusiasm and spunk and needs clear guidelines and boundaries.  He interacts with each of our "kids" differently and from the moment he met them, it was clear that a mutual bond and respect was formed.  In addition to the wonderful relationship he forms with his canine clients, Brandon is also highly skilled at effective communication with us humans.  In class, I never feel nervous or pressured.  As a handler I learn so much and as a dog lover, I have an absolute blast.  Brandon gives plenty of one on one attention and seamlessly blends this technique with leading the class as a whole.  We all are blessed to know him and to be the recipients of his guidance and expertise.

We wanted to let you know that we enjoy working with both you and Brandon.   We look forward to the class and hopefully Kobe does too, lol.    Both of you make the training fun and not an endless chore.  There is something new to learn every week.  Today was geometry, lol.  The part I like the best is not always the same dogs or same group of people week after week.  Different faces and different breeds mixes it up quite nicely and we wanted to thank you both of you for the fun time.

Dixie the Bloodhound

I can't say enough good things about Olympia Kennels and Brandon. I brought our 2 year old blood hound to them for a five week train and board after a so called leading specialist in animal behavior  had given us completely inaccurate advice, the result being that her fear based aggression had worsened to the point of her being almost house bound. I had heard nightmare stories about "doggie boot camps" and I wanted to make sure that wasn't the situation there. As I was waiting to meet with Mike Pinkston I asked a woman who was there waiting for a lesson with her dog whether she could give me any information. Her reply:" Mike knows dogs better than anyone I know".

...His approach made a HUGE amount of sense:  that essentially you have to develop a relationship with the dog and THEN   your non-response to the feared object shows the dog that her trusted leader isn't afraid, so she doesn't have to be either.  In that initial contact I also took note of the fact that Mike told me many of his staff have worked for him for over twenty years; no one stays in an unpleasant situation for that long. That also told me a lot.

When I returned five weeks later I picked up a different dog: able to walk by strangers, dogs, etc .without any reaction at all, it was amazing. I had a one hour training session with Brandon before leaving. Having trained my boxer before this dog with clicker based training I was taken aback to see her with a prong collar. I had always had really negative associations to them. When Brandon explained to me their function-similar to an alpha... I was completely reassured; it made huge sense. I took her home.

This is where the story gets interesting. As Brandon had predicted, the transition home was rough and within about two days I was beginning to see the same behavior. I was totally discouraged and did not see any way we could keep this dog after everything we tried, and emailed Olympia to see if they might know anyone who would be interested in taking her. Brandon called me and basically told me he wasn't LETTING me give up; that transitions are hard, and he would help....he would come down to Newton (an hour away) the next day (a Sunday) and would stay there working with us as long as we needed....and he did.

Over the course of the next month Brandon has gone above and beyond the call of duty working with me to get things right...and I am VERY confident that we are on the right road. Brandon lets my dog know- in no uncertain terms- that he is the boss. Once upon a time I would have been startled by his quick and decisive corrections, but there is NOTHING negative or unpleasant about them, they redirect my dog's attention back to her relationship with Brandon...a relationship in which my dog feels safe and secure...and therefore doesn't have any need to react aggressively. Brandon's work with me has essentially been to support ME in developing the confidence that would allow me to take over that role with my dog-so that she can feel secure and safe with me. I have emailed him endlessly with questions and he is available to help and advise...his knowledge and understanding of dogs seems intuitive and is very thorough. He takes this very seriously... working with the dog, the family, whomever, in order to make the fit work. I am incredibly grateful to him and to Olympia Kennels for saving us from what could have been a very sad ending to this situation.
